Community Investment Project

Modern Times is Now Investing 10% of the Total Sales on All Events Books to Community Organizations

Modern Times' ability to not only survie, but thrive, is directly related to the health of our community. For over twenty-five years that community has been centered in the Mission. It is no coincidence that as the face of the Mission changes, we find that keeping our doors open is increasingly difficult.

In order to insure a vibrant future that centers low-income people, working class Latino families, artists, and local business, Modern Times has committed to investing 10% of our event book sales to different community organizations working for social justice and community vitality in the Mission.

Every other month, Modern Times Bookstore chooses a community organization working towards social justice in San Francisco's Mission District to both receive funds and to spotlight in our event calendar and press release. Currently, Modern Times is collecting money to invest towards the activities of the May First Planning Committee.

About Our Current Donation Recipient

May First Planning Committee
Made up of Immigrant Rights, Community, Labor and other Social Justice activists, the May First Planning Committee is dedicated to building upon the massive show of strength that, on May Day 2006, stopped seven controversial proposed Immigration Reform bills dead in their tracks. In 2009, immigration policy has essentially dropped off the political map despite the effect of such policies on millions of people in the U.S. The May First Planning Committee aims to bring those most-impacted together in order to restart the national dialog around immigrant rights.
