Dancing with Dynamite: Social Movements & States in Latin America
Ben Dangl
  - Friday, March 11
  - 7 PM

In the past decade, grassroots social movements played major roles in electing left-leaning governments throughout Latin America, but subsequent relations between the streets and the states remain uneasy. In Dancing with Dynamite, award-winning journalist Benjamin Dangl explores the complex ways these movements have worked with, against, and independently of national governments. From dynamite-wielding miners in Bolivia to the struggles of landless farmers in Brazil and Paraguay, Dangl discusses the dance between movements and states in seven different Latin American countries. Using original research, lively prose, and extensive interviews with workers, farmers, and politicians, he suggests how Latin American social movement strategies could be applied internationally to build a better world now.

Susie Bright’s Smugglers’ Cove Birthday Bash and Book Party
Big Sex, Little Death!

Susie Bright
  - Thursday, March 24
  - 6-9 PM
  - OFF-SITE: Smugglers' Cove, 650 Gough Street (at McAllister), San Francisco

In her new memoir, Big Sex, Little Death, Susie Bright recounts the adventure, sacrifice, danger, and controversy of her unexpected and extraordinary life. Susie’s life began in at the cusp of the 60s with her proto-linguist parents, who traveled the globe of vanishing languages, hidden worlds teetering on extinction. Their divorce, and the unprecedented deaths and cliffhangers that followed, led Susie through a panorama of mid-century California dreaming: Brush dances, Venice beaches, Gay beatniks.

By the 80s, Susie launched to fame as the first mainstream journalist in old-school porn, and co-founded the first women’s sex magazine, On Our Backs— which led to a Shakespearean-level drama, complete with knives and bombs. What’s a peace-loving feminist sex guru to do? Having a baby hadn’t been in her plans. Come celebrate Susie's groundbreaking life.
