Since 1971, Modern Times has survived the collapse of the New Left from which it emerged, the assault of chain bookselling, the death of independent stores throughout the country, gentrification of the Mission, and the competition from online booksellers. We see this as testimony to the commitment of our community to a literate and lively exchange of ideas and ideals. Memberships
Become a part of the Modern Times community! Modern Times members receive a 10% discount on all purchases, on top of existing discounts. For example, staff picks, hardcover fiction, and Northern California Independent Booksellers Association bestsellers are always 10% off for all customers, but members receive a 20% discount. Members receive our monthly events calendar in the mail and get to participate in special member-only sales. Members also get their admission fees to events waived, as well as reduced rates on classes. Even better, they get the satisfaction of supporting one of the oldest progressive spaces in the Mission for literarture, culture, and ideas. So sign up, or renew, today!

To become a member just drop by the store, sign up over the phone, or simply send a check and specify that it's for a membership. Please be sure to include your full address so we can send you the monthly events calendar. Go to our
contact page for our number and address.
Or, for your convenience, we now also offer the ability to sign up via
